![]() Another important change that a character may undergo is a change in values, or it could be an overall change in the nature of the character.ġ1 Static/Dynamic Do not focus on changes that happen TO a character, but rather, changes that happen WITHIN a character. These would include a major change in his/her personality or a change in his/her outlook on life. We are only concerned with internal changes-changes which occur within the character. If your list is short, or there are not many characteristics at all, then the character is flat.ġ0 Static/Dynamic The key word when dealing with the difference between static and dynamic characters is "change." The type of change, though, is specific. Answer the question: What do you know about the character? If your list is long, with many characteristics, then the character is round. There are many things you cannot “see,” or many details you are not given by the author.Ĩ Round/Flat As a reader, judge whether or not the character is round or flat by trying to write down characteristics of the character. This is how a flat character is you can only see a few characteristics of the character. If you draw a flat picture of a house, for example, you can only see one side of it. The main character in a story is almost always round.ĥ Round If you are reading a story and you feel like you know a character extremely well, then most likely the character is round.Ħ Flat Characters that are not described well-that you are not given much information about-are flat characters.ħ Flat Consider a drawing: a three- dimensional drawing gives more detail than a one-dimensional drawing. Which characters are most important? How will giving detail, or not giving detail, about that character affect the story?Ĥ Round Characters that are described in depth-with many details-are well-rounded characters. Do you want many lines and many colors or just an outline and only black and white?ģ Round/Flat Likewise, authors must decide how much detail to include about each character. If you are an artist, you must decide how much detail to put into a painting. Because of the depth and complexity of Anakin, the viewer comes to understand his turn to the "dark side." We also see him reconcile with his son at the end of Return of the Jedi.2 Round/Flat Let's begin by thinking about round and flat characterization like a painting. Throughout the series of movies, we see Anakin as a little boy and a young man overcome with fear of losing the love of his life. In the Star Wars series, Anakin Skywalker (aka Darth Vader) is a round character. Through Scout's complex thoughts and feelings as a young girl navigating the Jim Crow South, the reader comes to understand the unfair nature of Tom Robinson's trial and the complexity of human nature and society. Scout in To Kill a Mockingbird is a round character. The reader learns much about Harry-his background, his feelings, and how the circumstances of his parents' deaths link him to Voldemort. Rowling develops Harry Potter as a round character throughout the series. Ponyboy's thoughts and feelings paint him as not a "typical greaser," and the reader is able to better understand the prejudice and stereotyping between the greasers and the socs because of Ponyboy's complexity. Hinton's The Outsiders, Ponyboy is a round character. We learn much about Elizabeth's thoughts and feelings, and even how her pride stands in the way, initially, of her feelings for Mr. ![]() ![]() In Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice, the main character Elizabeth Bennett is a round character.
